Wayne Coyne likes to use his iPhone to take videos of everything he finds interesting. So much so that he supplied us with close to 20 hours of footage. A Year In The Life Of Wayne’s Phone is an avant garde documentary presented in a triptych form; three constant streams of different video playing simultaneously in a 16×9 format with their coinciding audio. It is definitely visually and aurally challenging, which is why I’ve enjoyed working on this edit so much.

Our 1,000th job is coming up and I still get asked about what exactly Delo is and does, so Dan and I sat down and finally took some time to make a functional, hopefully informational Delo site.

Our old blog was extremely clunky, and you really had to work to see more than the five or six most recent projects. With the new site we tried to quickly show a wider range of projects and hopefully explain a little more about what this group actually does.

DELO CREATIVE • NSFW-ING THE NEW DELO SITE

While designing the new Delo site, we decided it’d be a good idea make a not-NSFW feature. It seems lots of our content gets flagged, so why not do the flagging ourselves? If you’ve got cookies turned on, you can play with the links to the left.

The site is built on a WordPress backend, so that was our starting point. Our initial idea was to assign all NSFW material a special CSS class that we could hide (display:hidden or visibility:none), even animating the effect with jQuery. The benefit of this is the quick switching without reloading the page (think PANIC button), but this method is more about hiding the material then actually not being exposed to it in the fist place. Aside from making the grid structure feel clunky, the solution still is less than useful for individual posts, not to mention still causing sketchy material to be written to the router logs of your IT guy.

Solution 2: Do censoring server side. Every NSFW post has a tag marking it as such. Then, every query loop checks a global php variable set according to your selected settings as saved in a cookie. If a post is nsfw & you’re set to safe mode, then the content span’s background is a lovely black box. Also, the embedded video and featured image never load, nor are they even linked to. This means no worries for the user stuck in a stiflingly conservative work environment.

These actions are preformed in a couple of functions, but here’s the cookie code to place in your theme’s functions.php file for anyone wanting to do similar. It may save you some headaches:

So there’s the cookie being written and rewritten by the url. Add the following to your .htaccess:

Redirect 301 /safe /?safe=on

and you can send anyone a simple http://delocreative.com/clean link and they’ll be ready to not see some of your most impressive work.

As a note, make sure you define $safeflag as a global variable in each function you use it and maybe in your template header for good measure. For users unfamiliar with php, just paste this:
